Resumo

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in a concept defined in 1990 and updated in 2002, Palliative Care consists of assistance provided by a multidisciplinary team, which aims to improve the quality of life of the patient and their families, faced with a disease that threatens life, through the prevention and relief of suffering. Among the members of the team that assists hospitalized patients, nurses stand out for their permanence and uninterrupted provision of care, witnessing their anguish and suffering in the process of death and dying. The objective of the study is to describe nursing care for patients with advanced chronic illness, from the perspective of palliative care. This is a literature review, which seeks to describe a certain subject, based on analyzes and interpretations of existing scientific production. The study provided a discussion about the palliative care provided to the patient, the role of each professional who makes up the multidisciplinary team and the integration of the patient, family and/or caregiver in all decisions inherent to the treatment. Keywords: nursing; care; palliative care; chronic disease.
